Katharine Lee Bates: During Katharine's short stay in Colorado Springs she began the first stanza of what would become the poem "America the Beautiful". Like many other writers of her time she had a life that has been overshadowed by the above work.  Why did she come to Colorado Springs and what did she do to make a living?  It wasn't just writing.  Let Katherine tell her story in her own words.
